Acupuncture Treatment for Low Back Pain
Kim Yong-Suk

Abstract
Low back pain (LBP) affects up to 80% of the adult population. A variety of factors can lead to LBP. Various treatment options have been proposed to provide relief of symptoms. Unfortunately, few of them are completely effective, and some produce side-effects more troublesome than the condition itself. One type of therapy that appears to offer some hope to patients is acupuncture. The principles of Oriental medicine for LBP and acupuncture procedures are presented. This knowledge provides a basis for treatment. In Oriental medicine, LBP is mainly classified into three patterns; invasion by pathogenic cold and dampness, blood stasis obstructing vessels and collaterals, and kidney dysfunction. Acupuncture is a simple, effective, and conservative pain control modality. The application of acupuncture consists of the insertion of needles into certain points and the stimulating such points either by manipulation, electric pulses, or other appliances. Acupuncture treatment is point-specific along the meridian, which means the selection of the point is very important. The principle of acupuncture treatment for LBP is to select the local points and also a distal point on the meridian that crosses the painful area. The manipulation of needles include such techniques as manual twisting and up-down pistoning action. Other modalities used are moxibustion, electroacupuncture, laser acupuncture, and acupressure.
